When renting an RV, especially for the first time, there are a lot of things you need to know. The more informed you are before beginning your search to buy or rent an RV, the better decision you will make and the less stress it will be.
Drivable vs Towable Pros and Cons
One of the things you need to know when renting an RV is whether you are interested in a drivable motorhome or towable camper.
Drivable
- Pros –
- Able to part and sleep without getting out of your vehicle
- Easier to level; may include auto-leveling technology
- Cons –
- Unless towing a second vehicle, this will be the main source of transportation and will need to be reset each time you leave/arrive at the campsite
- More expensive to purchase and rent
Towable
- Pros –
- Able to bring a smaller vehicle on the journey to park the towable and drive around town
- Less expensive to purchase or rent
- Comes with various options ranging from small pop up to large toy hauler or fifth wheel
- Cons –
- Requires leveling at campsite
- Must leave vehicle to park and camp
RV Types
Drivable
- Class A Motorhome – largest most comfortable option, range from 30-45ft, and come with most standard and optional features in a motorhome. This motorhome has plenty of sleeping areas and can typically accommodate 8-12 people. Due to size and weight, this option is typically poor in gas millage and can range from 6-12mi/gal
- Class B Sleeper/Camper Van – smallest motorhome class, confused yet by B is smaller than C, if A is the largest? Yeah I had to let that one go, but if you have the answer please comment below
- Class C Motorhome – standard/mid sized motorhome option, easier to drive, range from 12-30ft, more affordable to rent or buy
Towable
- 5th Wheel – largest towable option and can range in price and luxury. This option would definitely require a vehicle capable of towing this camper due to its size and weight
- Toy Hauler – great option if you want to bring ATVs or gold carts on your road trip
- Camper/Pop-up – smallest and most affordable option to rent or purchase, large range of amenity/features based on make/model.
